Pre-Psychological Science and Psychological Science Travel Awards
OPEN Rolling deadline, apply at any time

The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce travel awards to help support pre-Psychological Science or Psychological Science undergraduates presenting at conferences. We will consider funding requests of up to $500, and preference will be given to first-time presenters at conferences. There is a rolling deadline for these awards which means that applications will continue to be accepted and reviewed until our funds are depleted. If you would like to apply for an undergraduate travel award, you should complete an online application, and provide supporting materials (a letter of recommendation, your curriculum vitae (CV) or resume, and evidence that your submission was accepted for presentation by the conference when available).

Thank you for your interest in the Psychology department’s Undergraduate Research Grant program! These
grants are intended to support research projects being conducted by Psychological Sciences (B.S.) majors who
are currently enrolled at the University of Arizona.
To be considered for an Undergraduate Research Grant, you must submit the online application
(https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cOweQy0wYu7aJ9k), including:
Statement of Proposed Research
Budget detailing your request
A Letter of Support from a Psychology faculty member who will sponsor and oversee your project,
including distribution of any awarded funds
Projects must be supervised by a University of Arizona faculty sponsor from the Psychology department. You
should work with them to complete the grant application.

Scholarship eligibility:

  • Full-time undergraduate majoring in Psychology
  • First-generation college student (First generation is defined as the first person in a family to attend college)

Scholarship eligibility:

  • Full-time undergraduate Psychology or Psychological Science Major in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd year
  • Financial need or inability to obtain Federal Financial Aid
  • Preference for first-generation college students

Kathryn Anne Governal Perseverance Award

Award Amount: $220.50

About the Award: This annual award is granted to a student (graduating in May) in the Psychology Department who is persevering in the face of great difficulties. The student awarded this distinction will be given a $220.50 award and a plaque in honor of their accomplishments. A permanent plaque, inscribed with all recipients’ names, is prominently displayed in the Psychology Building. The faculty of the Psychology Department of shall select the recipient of the award. Financial need and grade point average are not criteria for selection.

Kathryn Anne Governal (1966-1999) is remembered as an empathetic and caring journalist. Katherine was very popular student at the University of Arizona, earning her Bachelor of Media Arts degree with a minor in Journalism in December of 1995. She also went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Arizona in May of 1998. In the Spring of 2000, the family of Kathryn Anne Governal decided to celebrate her life and her determination by funding the Kathryn Anne Governal Perseverance Award Endowment.

Applicant Eligibility: Students eligible for the Kathryn Anne Governal Perseverance Award will be of senior status, graduating in May of 2024.

Required Documents:

  1. To nominate yourself please submit a personal statement. The personal statement should include:
    Your full name and Student ID #
  2. Information on the challenges that you have encountered in life and your undergraduate career, and
  3. how you have persisted toward your goal of graduation and overcome these obstacles. Your statement should be no more than 550 words.

 

Psychology Outstanding Senior Award / College of Science Outstanding Senior Award

Award Amount: $250

About the Award: The recipient of the department award will automatically be nominated by the department for the College of Science Outstanding Senior Award.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • The student must be a Psychology Senior, and eligible for the upcoming Spring 2024 graduation ceremony.
  • G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher
  • Involvement in research/internship
  • Contribution to community outreach/service, participation in philanthropic activities, or involvement with clubs/organizations in the campus community.

William Owen Nugent Award / Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award (COS)

Award Amount: $1,000

About the Award: The William Owen Nugent Award for excellence in undergraduate research is awarded yearly by the Psychology Department to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in research and academics. The recipient of this award will receive $1,000 and be the department’s nominee for the College of Science Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • The student must be a Psychology Senior, and eligible for the upcoming Spring 2024 graduation ceremony.
